We are delighted to be invited by floral artist and fellow nature obsessive Joanna Game to host a one-day workshop at Porth-en-alls, situated in the breathtaking Prussia Cove in Cornwall. The workshop will take place on Wednesday 29th April following Joanna’s renowned Beltane weekend retreat which runs from 24th - 26th April.

One of our favourite textile artists Lora Avedian is opening the weekend with a day-long embroidery workshop on Tuesday 28th – you can join for either one of our workshops, or you can sign up for the full five-days and experience everything from early morning swims on the Cornish coast, drawing and painting from nature, flower arranging and collaboratively building a beautiful natural installation, to cosy evenings by the fire and delicious food.

In our day-long workshop, we invite you explore the ancient art of Flower Pressing; a chance to switch off and reconnect with the cycles of nature. The uniquely unspoilt landscape in Prussia Cove is truly majestic - we will forage for spring flowers and intriguing plant specimens to press in a flower press which is yours to keep and use for years to come. It’s always surprising to discover how much is out there when you take the time to look closely.

We will teach you all the techniques and processes you need to ensure satisfying results from your press - how to select and prepare your specimens as well as maintaining them throughout the drying process, along with all the tips and tricks we've learnt over the years. Observing the plants in their natural habitat – how they bend and stretch towards the light or how they move in the breeze – will inspire your use of materials, colour and composition when it comes to making your own pressed flower artworks to take home.

No prior experience is necessary, but this workshop could also benefit those who already have an interest in pressing flowers and would like to broaden their knowledge and skillset.

Day Schedule:

10:00   Meet at the entrance to Porth-en-Alls.

10:00 - 10:30   Get settled into the Trewartha farmhouse barn and our surroundings. We will give a short introduction to our work, the stories that have informed why we do what we do and where we find inspiration.

10:30 - 11:00   We will take a short walk to explore the landscape, looking for intriguing specimens to press, gathering a handful each to take back to the barn.

11:00 - 11:15   Morning tea/coffee break

11:15 - 12:30   Flower pressing demonstration and hands-on workshop - you will learn all about the process of flower pressing, and will fill your own press will specimens we gathered earlier.

12:30 - 13:00   We can use any extra time we have before lunch to show you some more complex techniques - how to tackle trickier flowers and large scale specimens.

13:00 - 13:45   Lunch

13:45 - 15:00   Artwork demonstration and hands-on workshop - you will learn how to compose and mount your own pressed flower artwork using specimens we have pressed for you in advance and a variety of handmade papers.

15:00 - 15:15   Afternoon tea/coffee

15:15 - 15:45   For those who have finished creating their artworks and are eager to learn more we can open up some larger scale presses, look at some framing ideas and share some further inspirations for the season ahead.

15:45 - 16:00   Show and tell and tidy up.
